In 1777 the leader George Washington was having some trouble keeping his troops in the army. The army ended up at Valley Forge because George Washington decided to build a winter camp when it was snowing and really cold. I am writing an essay describing if I would quit or stay at Valley Forge. What I mean by quit I mean by I wouldn’t re-enlist into Valley Forge. I am not going to re-enlist because of all the poor living conditions, I feel like the government isn’t helping me enough, and I feel like I’m going to get sick and die.

I would quit Valley forge because of the poor living conditions. I would quit Valley Forge because soldiers were barefoot in the snow and they had nasty clothing that was falling apart. In the engraving, by William Henry Powell I see soldiers that are standing barefoot in the snow and all of their clothes all torn and looking old (Doc. B). So since everyone at Valley Forge had no shoes and nasty clothing I wouldn’t want to be like that in the snow. I worry that there is a good chance that I would get sick being in the cold like that. Another poor living condition is that the huts that the soldiers stayed in were very smoky and the soldiers that stayed there weren’t able to breath being in there (Doc. C). I worry that if I stay in the huts any longer I would probably die because I had no clean refreshing air.

Another reason on why I would quit Valley Forge is I felt like the government wasn’t helping me. I would quit Valley Forge because the government was giving us any money to get food (Doc. B). So since the government wasn’t giving us any money or food I was starting to worry that I was going to die of starvation. Also, I would want to have nice healthy looking food instead of old nasty food that wasn’t good anymore. Another reason on why I felt like the government wasn’t helping me was because they didn’t give us any nice clothing or at least some money to get more clothing for the soldiers (Doc. B). So since the government wasn’t giving us any supplies or money for new clothing I felt like I was going to die from frostbite since it was snowing.

The last reason on why I would quit Valley Forge was many soldiers that got illnesses and die. I would quit Valley Forge because during the time of 1777 – 1778 there were at least 1,800 to 2.500 soldiers that died when they were at Valley Forge (Doc. A). I would not want to take the risk of being one of those 2,500 soldiers that died. Another reason on why I would quit Valley Forge because of the high death estimates due to illness during the encampment was December – June was 1,800 to 2,500 (Doc. A). So since there was a high death estimate due to illnesses I wouldn’t want to get sick while I’m at Valley Forge and I don’t want to get an illness there since they didn’t have any doctors or any cures to help the soldiers that were sick.

I am not going to re-enlist because of all the poor living conditions, I feel like the government aren’t helping me, and I feel like I’m going to get sick and die. Since everything bad happened during Valley Forge I don’t think anyone else would want to stay there and risk their lives. Also, many people didn’t like being there since they were away from their family and they may or may not see them again if they die there.
