Then Leeana used the DBQ Essential Question to write her essay.

The first two years of the American Revolution had not gone well for the continental army and many wanted to quit. Many soldiers wanted to quit because George Washington set up camp in Pennsylvania where the living conditions weren’t that great. I wrote this essay to describe why I am not going to re-enlisting at Valley Forge. I would not re-enlist at Valley Forge because of the poor conditions, the government is not helping, and I don’t want to get sick or die.

First off, I would not have re-enlisted at Valley Forge because of all the poor conditions the army faced. One poor condition that the continental army faced was that all their clothing was ripped and dirty(Doc C). Another poor condition was poor ventilation in the huts(Doc C). The huts in Valley Forge did not have any windows so when they cooked in the huts all the smoke stayed inside and everyone was breathing it in  (Doc C).

Secondly, I would not have re-enlisted because the government was not helping the continental army. One way the government wasn’t helping was when they went to Valley Forge you look at the continental congress they’re all dressed up and healthy, then you look at the continental army and they’re all dirty and sick with bad clothing(Doc B). Another way the government wasn’t helping was while they were at Valley Forge they could have left some of the congressmen to gather supplies for the army.

Lastly, I would not have re-enlisted because I don’t want to get sick or die. Some days I could have gotten sick was from scarlet fever, inhaling smoke, and the bad weather(Doc C). Some days I could die was from fighting in the war, scarlet fever, bad weather, and inhaling the smoke(Doc C). This matters because How am I supposed to fight for the country when I am sick or dying.

All in all, the first couple years of the American Revolution hadn’t gone too well for the continental army and many wanted to quit. I personally would not have re-enlisted at Valley Forge because of the poor conditions, the government isn’t trying to help us, and I do not want to get sick or die.
