So Many Ways Colonists Died by Luis G.

One hundred Englishmen sailed from the Mother country of England to the New World. Englishman were the first people besides Native Americans to set foot in the New World and stay there permanently. Out of those one hundred men, only forty survived the first six months in the New World. The English wanted to build settlements. They wanted to build one at Jamestown, Virginia during 1607-1611.  Englishmen wanted a better life and to trade with China. They wanted to escape death and make money. There are many reasons colonists died at Jamestown from 1607-1611. They are brackish water, poor settler skills, and bad relations with the Native Americans.

One reason so many colonists died was brackish water. Englishmen would throw their feces into the river (Doc A). The bad thing about this is they did not know how the tides worked so the feces would come back (Doc A). Any time they would jump into the water, bathe in it, or drink the water they were at a big risk of getting a disease (Doc A). Also, the water had so much filth in it, it was simply dangerous to get in. In addition, the water was brackish. When Englishmen drank water they were probably getting sick (Doc A).  This was one of the reasons so many colonists died. This one reason killed off  so many colonists because of the diseases they would get from drinking, bathing, or just jumping into the water.

Another reason many colonists died was because of ¨poor settler skills¨. One reason they had poor settler skills was that the men thought women were not strong enough or smart enough to survive in the New World (Doc C). Men started to die because they needed the women to take care of them. They did not know how to take care of themselves (Doc C). Another reason they had poor settler skills is because the gentlemen did not do hard useful work (Doc C). The gentlemen were sitting all day mostly gambling.

Another reason so many colonists died was because of the ¨bad relations¨ between them and the Native Americas. The English had bad relations with the Native Americans because the English killed two Native Americans (Doc A). The Native Americans did not want to trade with the Englishmen because the Englishmen two Powhatans killed (Doc A). The reason the Englishmen need to trade is they needed resources to survive. One resource needed was water. The Englishmen needed water at one point because they were in a drought.

In conclusion, it must have been sad for the people at Jamestown to watch their friends die from all of these different causes. We learned how they died from the brackish water, poor settler skills, and bad relations with the Native Americans.
