While working at a construction site in Alexandria, Virginia, construction workers found a 250 year old ship buried in the ground. The area where the ship was found used to be the Potomac River, it was filled in with dirt about 200 years ago to make the waterfront larger. Perhaps they used the boat as fill. Which means they used the boat as filler because there was not enough dirt. Using trash as fill was very common in the past. Archaeologists estimate the boat was used somewhere between 1775 and 1798. There are plans to save what is left of the ship and move it so that it can be closely studied.
